AI Can Build a Pretty Website. It Can’t Make It Convert.

October 22, 2026 | Tips

Last month a business owner told me something that stuck with me. She had used an AI tool to build her whole website in an afternoon. It looked great. Clean layout, nice photos, good fonts. Then she said, “So why isn’t the phone ringing?”

I hear a version of that almost every week. The answer is not that the tool did a bad job. It did exactly what it was built to do. It made a pretty website. Making a website that brings in business is a different job.

What AI is good at

AI builds layouts fast. It can pick colors, write a paragraph about your company, and arrange a page so it looks professional. If all you need is something that looks like a real website, that part is now easy.

But a website is not a brochure. It has one job: get the right person to pick up the phone, send a message, or give. And that job depends on things a tool does not know.

What AI does not know

It does not know your customers. It does not know what keeps them up at night, what they have already tried, or what they are afraid will go wrong if they hire you. It does not know the one sentence that makes a pastor, a plumber, or a bakery owner think, “That’s exactly what I need.”

You know those things, or your team can learn them. That knowledge is what turns a good-looking page into one that works.

The Conversion Formula in plain language

Every page on a website that works follows the same four steps. Here they are in order.

1. Captivate. Start with their problem, not your company. The headline should sound like something your customer would say. “Your website looks great. So why isn’t the phone ringing?” gets a business owner’s attention. “Welcome to our company” does not.

2. Fascinate. Right under the headline, in one or two sentences, tell them what you can do about it. This is the sub-headline. A visitor decides in a few seconds whether to keep reading. If they have to work out what you do, they leave for the next site.

3. Educate. Give them the facts and the proof. Real reviews from real clients. A short explanation of how it works. Answers to the questions they are too polite to ask. This is where trust is built.

4. Close. Offer one clear next step and make it easy. One button. One form. When a page gives visitors five choices, they pick none.

Notice that none of this is about colors or layout. It is about the order you say things in, and who you are talking to.

Why pretty sites stall

When I look at websites that are not bringing in business, I almost always find the same three problems:

  • Visitors cannot tell what the business does in the first few seconds.
  • There is no single, obvious next step.
  • The site looks good but was never built around what the customer needs to hear.

An AI tool will happily give you a beautiful version of all three. It cannot ask you the questions that fix them, because it does not know which questions matter for your business.

A quick example

Say you run a home cleaning service. The AI version of your homepage says, “Excellence in cleaning, delivered.” It sounds fine and tells a visitor nothing. The version that works says, “Come home to a clean house, without giving up your Saturday.” Then it shows three reviews from busy parents and one button: “Get my free quote.” Same business, same photos. Different order, different words, and a very different number of phone calls.

This applies to ministries too

If you run a ministry or a nonprofit, you have a conversion goal as well. It might be a visit on Sunday, a gift, a volunteer sign-up, or a message from someone who needs help. The same four steps apply. A ministry site that opens with a mission statement and ten menu items gives a visitor no reason to act. One that opens with the person’s need, shows that you understand it, and offers one clear way to take the next step does.

What to do about it

You do not need to throw away your website. Most of the time the fix is a handful of changes: a clearer headline, one button instead of five, and proof placed where people will see it.

That is why we created Your Plan. You fill out a short form with your website address. I look at your site myself, not a program and not a template, and I send you a personal video, under 2 minutes, within 2 business days. In it I show you 3 things you can change today to turn more visitors into calls and customers.

There is nothing to learn and nothing to install. You watch the video, and you decide what to do with it.

Get Your Plan, and let’s find the 3 things holding your website back.
