I have included a link to a very informative article regarding the use of spam to infect and control your computer device. But I will summarize the content and hope that you will read the full article soon.
As the article states, email has once again become the primary vehicle for spreading malware and scams. The scammers are getting more sophisticated and devious. The damage from these people ranges from marketing scams to outright theft with ransomware and identity theft. In my position as CEO of an Internet safety company, I have seen and heard countless first-hand stories of scammer victims. These stories include people who are very computer savvy. So no one is immune!
However, there are some things you can do help protect yourself and your family.
• Be suspicious!
• If an email from a “friend” looks out of character – don’t open it.
• Use the preview function in your email browser, it allows you to preview the email without opening it.
• Avoid any financial transaction through email. The scammers are very good at faking legitimate websites to steal from you.
• Although the public email services are convenient, they are a constant scam target. Use a private email service instead.
• Remember the old adage – “If it looks too good to be true, it probably isn’t true.
Please take a few moments to read the article and educate yourself so that you do not become the next email scam victim.
